June is the perfect month to seek out waterfalls. This winter had lots of snow late in the seaon, much of which is still to melt in the weeks to come.
Only 70km from Bergen, right next to the road on route to Norheimsund is a little pearl of an experience waiting for you. The Steinsdalsfossen waterfall might look small from the main road, but you will be surprised and not regret getting close up to it.
One reason for this is the possibility of walking right beneath the actual drop of the waterfall. There is a pedestrian road offering amazing access and views of this beautiful jet of water. Not only do you get to view the Steinsdalsfossen from all kinds of angles walking up the small hill next to it, you can actually stand under the water jet bursting out from the hill, and cross to the other side.
Solid platforms with fences keep you safe and offers great views from several angles. If you are into photography this place is a must.
The area around the Steinsdalsfossen is like a little piece of Norway, with historic wooden houses and farms all around. The view towards the valley is good from the top of the platform overlooking the fall.
The waterfall is not higher than about 50 metres in total, with a free fall of water of about 20 meters. However, it seems much bigger than it sounds once you are there, particularly in the spring and early summer time.
Walking or running to the Steinsdalsfossen is also an option if you are staying in the village of Norheimsund. There is a perfect running route of about 6 km from Norheimsund around the Movatnet that will take you past the spectacular Steinsdalsfossen. On this route you can choose either side of Movatnet, and cross the river on the bridge right next to Steinsdalsfossen, which will make the route to a loop, perfect for running.
Norheimsund is well worth a stay in its own right, a small village of approx. 4400 inhabitants beautifully located between the fjord and the mountains. Norheimsund is the trade centre of the outer Hardanger and a typical junction for mobility due to good connections with bus, boat, ferries and roads. It has a beautiful beach and bay area, and a historic hotel Thon Hotel Sandven.
Have a great trip to Hardanger. Stay tuned for more blog posts about Hardanger coming soon.
